Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, who is nominated for best actress at the 97th Academy Awards, is reportedly attending the ceremony, amidst her old tweets controversy.
As per a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Gascón's travel costs will be covered by streaming giant Netflix, which released the Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez in November.
For the unversed, Gascón is the first openly trans woman to bag a nomination for a best actress Oscar award.
She told the portal, “I’m not sure how I feel, but I’m grateful to be back,” adding, “I’m grateful to all those who’ve believed in me — to Netflix, the production company and my colleagues. We can close this beautiful and difficult path that began three years ago.”
The 22-year-old from Almora, a 2021 World Championships bronze medallist, squandered three game points in the first game and a 7-0 lead in the second to surrender to the two-time world champion Axelsen in a 54-minute semi-final clash.
Gascón was basking on the success of her critically-acclaimed film, Emilia Pérez till she got embroiled in the controversy for her old tweets that resurfaced, recently.
Her posts included some controversial remarks about Black people, immigrants, Islam and diversity at the Oscars. Gascón has apologized and also said that she would be stepping back from the Oscar campaign of her movie in order to let the film stand on its own.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that post her controversial remarks, the actress was removed from major entertainment industry events, including the Critics Choice Awards, the Directors Guild of America Awards, AFI Awards luncheon, and the Producers Guild of America Awards.
It was also reported that Netflix distanced itself from providing any financial support for her travel and styling.
