India are set to clash with New Zealand in the final of the ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, 9th March 2025. (Full Coverage | More Cricket News)

Men In Blue are eyeing their third Champions Trophy title after entering their third consecutive final. New Zealand are hopeful of their second title after winning their first in 2000.

ICC Champions Trophy was started in 1998 (called ICC KnockOut at that time) with the first edition hosted by Bangladesh. South Africa won the first edition with West Indies ending as runner-ups.

Since then, seven teams have won the tournament. Let's take a look at the previous winners of the ICC Champions Trophy over the years

1. South Africa (1998)

South Africa won the opening edition of the ICC Knockout in 1998. Bangladesh were the host of the first edition of the tournament where West Indies finished as runner-ups.

West Indies batted first in the final and set a 246-run target thanks to a century-knock from opener batter Philo Wallace (103). Jacques Kallis took a five-wicket haul for South Africa. The Hansie Cronje-led South African side won the match by four wickets with 18 balls to spare.

2. New Zealand (2000)

New Zealand won their first ICC trophy in an ODI tournament when they defeated India in the final. The second edition was hosted by Kenya.

Sourav Ganguly-led Indian side batted first and after a century-knock from Ganguly, India set a 265-run target for New Zealand which they chased down easily in the last over of the match. Coming to bat at number five, Chris Cairns made unbeaten 102 runs to help his side win the match in a thriller final in Nairobi.

3. Sri Lanka (2002)

Sri Lanka hosted the third edition of the Champions Trophy and shared the trophy with India after the match was abandoned due to rain. Sri Lanka batted first and made 222/7 thanks to half-centuries from Russell Arnold and Mahela Jayawardene. In response, India were 38/1 when rain interrupted the match and never resumed.

India shared the trophy with Sri Lanka in the 2002 edition and won their second ICC Champions Trophy title in 2013 beating hosts England in the final.

5. West Indies (2004)

England hosted the fourth edition of the tournament and managed to reach the final where they faced West Indies. England batted first at The Oval and made 217 runs thanks to opener batter Marcus Trescothick's 104 runs.

In response, the Brian Lara-led Windies lost eight wickets at 147 but the ninth wicket partnership between Ian Bradshaw and Courtnery Browne for 71 runs helped West Indies win their first Champions Trophy title.

6. Australia (2006, 2009)

Australia won the next two editions of the ICC Champions Trophy. In the 2006 edition, they defeated defending champions West Indies by eight wickets in Mumbai to become the first-time champions of the Champions Trophy.

The next edition was hosted by South Africa and Australia faced New Zealand in the final held at Centurion. New Zealand batted first and made 200 runs. In response, Shane Watson hit an unbeaten ton to help Australia win the match by six wickets.

7. Pakistan (2017)

Pakistan won their first Champions Trophy title in 2017 when they defeated arch-rivals India in the final played at The Oval. Pakistan batted first and made 338 runs thanks to Fakhar Zaman's brilliant century. Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar Ali also hit half-centuries.

In response, India lost their top-order wickets and were reeling at 72/6 at one stage. Hardik Pandya made a quick 76 to help India reach 158. They lost the match by 180 runs. Mohammad Amir and Hasan Ali picked up three wickets each.

Now, ICC Champions Trophy has returned after the gap of eight years. Pakistan are the official host, but India refused to visit Pakistan due to political reasonsbaixopg, and all India matches were played at a neutral venue (Dubai). The final on Sunday can help India win the title for the third time after missing out the last time.
